Declarative/Procedural Theory
Declarative memory system
Lexicon
Memory store: (at least)
all word-specific information:
-simple words (cat)
-irregulars: (dig-dug)
-complements (hit [direct object])
Language
Grammar
Rule-governed hierarchical and sequential (de-)composition
of complex forms:
-syntax (the cat; NP VP)
-morphology (regulars: walk -ed)
Procedural memory system
First Language
The declarative/procedural model claims that Lexicon is dependent on temporal lobe strucutres which also subserve declarative memory; memory for events and associative memory
on the other hand, grammar is dependent on frontal/basal ganglia circuits which also subserve procedural memory- motor skills and sequence computaitons
